Build Threads Motivation

If you haven’t checked out Build Threads, you’ve got to.  They feature some of the best builds around the internet.  One of these is a BMW 2002 restoration that is generating quite a bit console envy for me!

This console was made out of MDF and wrapped in vinyl.  The whole blog has some fantasic detail, The Road to Phoenix, but clicking the above picture will take you to some more pictures of the console.

Another cool thread I found on here was this DIY on Wrinkle Texture Paint.

I don’t know your personal opinion on it, but I like it when used tastefully.  I’ll be applying this to some select items underhood on the Mustang in the near future…

Momo Wheel Install

I teased with a picture of a new steering wheel for the Mustang the other day, but getting it installed was a bit tricker than anticipated.

I’d wanted something different for the Mustang and I found what I wanted in the Momo Mod 08 wheel.  It was leather wrapped, had a cool yellow stripe, and blacked out spokes which looked completely different than anything I’d seen on a classic Mustang.

Gifted by my Dad for my Birthday, I was stoked to get it installed.  Here’s what you get in the box:

Momo Wheel

Can’t say that I am often impressed by the quality of many products these days but damn this is a nicely done steering wheel by Momo!

Looking forward to getting it installed with the new seats.

Drifting in the K.S.A.

So, drifting isn’t for everyone, but you can’t deny the impressive car control these guys have.  Make this full-screen and crank the volume to hear some sweet sounds out of Vaughn Gittin Jr’s Mustang!

Steering Stops – Version 2

So, my previous hose clamps and rubber hose stop wasn’t quite doing the trick and I desired something with a bit more adjustability.

With the new repo fenders up front, clearance at the leading edge of the fender is an issue with the 225s I’ve got on the front of the car.  Not wanting to screw up the paint job by hammer rolling the front edge of the fender, I elected to setup some steering stops.  Here’s a shot of the steering arm and the factory steering stop.  Bit of a gap at the ideal position…

New Seats!

Anyone who’s autocrossed my Mustang will appreciate that it’s getting some new chairs.  Got a great deal on some lightly used Corbeau FX1s from a fellow autocrosser.  Just ordered the right seat tracks from SPS!

May not be the best for long distance, but that’s something the car sees rarely these days.  Next on the list is a roll/harness bar to add 4 point belts as well as a smaller steering wheel!

Work in Progress – “cold air”

Did a little work on the Mustang today. One of the persistent problems I’ve had since the fuel injection swap is an erratic idle at times. One of the common culprits to this (but by no means the only one) is turbulence due to fan wash. Since I’ve got a pretty high powered fan and an open element air cleaner, figured be a good idea to shield the filter some.

Couple pictures of a rough version cut from some galvanized sheet steel. By no means a finished product, it achieves the goal nicely I think!

Mustang Power Door Locks

A long planned mod finally got done on the Mustang.  There aren’t many guides on how to put power door lock actuators into a Classic Mustang so I figured I’d post some tips!

This install uses Spal Actuators.  This is the kit used:  LINK.  You can probably do this with many other actuators (maybe some factory Ford ones too).

Space is pretty limited inside the door.  After trying a number of different positions, I settled on one very similar to Fox door lock actuators and fabricated a sheet steel bracket.  It proved plenty sturdy in service and was basically free.  Two body nuts make install easy.

One of these is not like the other…

Guess lifting the inside tire and zinging the engine caused a bigger problem than we thought.  Turns out we really were on 7 cylinders at the Divisional as one of our lifter rollers decided to disintegrate…

Also found was a broken main cap and a chip out of the bottom of a cylinder, both byproducts of a high speed crankshaft encountering bits of lifter!

Needless to say it was a good thing we didn’t throw in a new lifter and head up to the Lincoln Tour!

SW Divisional #1 – TMS Bus Lot

2 hard days of racing, some unseasonal weather, and car troubles basically describes the weekend.  Todd and I ended up 1st and 3rd respectively, with Kurt Janish between us (on sticker tires I might add, we were on used ones).  Fun courses, but not very technical.  My driving was the best, which the data supports (for a later post), but looking forward to the next event!

The guys over at Vorshlag Motorsports got some good shots of the Camaro which I’ve got below.  Fully gallery is here!
