As wonderful as those cars and wins were (and the guru Carroll Smith was the crew chief), the tragically sad part of the story is that Ken Miles was robbed of a LeMans victory by following team orders from “The Deuce” (Henry Ford II) to slow down for a simultaneous Ford 1-2-3 finish, and the damned race officials then gave the win to Ritchie Ginther, even though Ken Miles crossed the line first, because Ginther started further down the grid and, thus “covered a greater distance in 24 hours.” Ken Miles died at the wheel of the follow-on “J-car” and never got the win he earned and deserved. An example of Corporate arrogance if there ever was one…..
